What is coaching all about?

Rather than reinventing the wheel on this, we’re going to quote from the ICF (International Coaching Federation) website. The ICF define coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential”. They go on to say: “Coaching honours the client as the expert in his/her life and work and believes that every client is creative, resourceful, and whole. Standing on this foundation, the coach's responsibility is to:

  • Discover, clarify, and align with what the client wants to achieve;
  • Encourage client self-discovery;
  • Elicit client-generated solutions and strategies; and
  • Hold the client responsible and accountable.

Professional coaches provide an ongoing partnership designed to help clients produce fulfilling results in their personal and professional lives. Coaches help people improve their performances and enhance the quality of their lives.  

Coaches are trained to listen, to observe and to customize their approach to individual client needs. They seek to elicit solutions and strategies from the client; they believe the client is naturally creative and resourceful. How does it work?

Your coach is your partner. Their only agenda is your agenda and we will focus on you and your success 100%. You will be asked powerful questions to:

  • clarify what you want to achieve and to define your goals
  • remove the obstacles to what you really want
  • ensure you set goals which aren’t too small or too overwhelming for you

You will have time to focus on what is important to you and you will be listened to. You will be provided with tools, structure and feedback to keep you on track. You won’t be judged or allowed to lose sight of your goals. Your Coach is your independent, totally confidential sounding board whose job is to bring out the best in you. Your success with a coach depends on your level of commitment to you and your goals. We will support and guide you but we don’t have a magic wand and we won’t take over and do things for you. You make the difference by taking the actions you determine.

Our Approach to Coaching

We believe in our clients. We don’t consider you to be broken so we are not here to fix you. We will encourage you to build on your past successes; challenge you to reach more of your potential and use your existing strengths to find solutions. We want the best for you, and we expect you to do your best and be willing to open your mind to new possibilities. To deliver lasting benefits we will help you focus on the root cause of issues, and not just treat the symptoms. We place a high value on working with integrity. This means being honest, establishing and maintaining trust, honouring values, being professional and objective and providing a return on your investment. As members of the ICF we subscribe to their code of ethics.

Your Commitment

To get the most from coaching requires that you are committed to the process. Firstly there needs to be some aspect of your life/ career that you want to change. Secondly, you need to be prepared to invest in your future. If you aren’t ready to take responsibility for your future life and make changes, there is no point in hiring a coach. You also need to be willing to expand your thinking, make time for coaching and actions, be honest and open in sharing your feelings and, be willing to keep going even when it may be uncomfortable or tough.

Where / how do we meet?

Coaching takes place in regular, scheduled sessions in person or by phone or Skype (a free online video phone facility). Coaching by Phone or Skype allows me to work with people anywhere in the world where there is access to a phone / the internet. It also makes coaching more convenient for you. There is no travelling time involved, and so long as you have privacy you can participate from wherever you are.

How long will I work with a coach?

The number and frequency of sessions will be determined by your individual needs. For coaching to be effective it usually takes a minimum of 3 – 4 months. Some clients want to work on a very specific ‘short-term’ goal which can be resolved by short term or intensive coaching. Other clients may be facing a series of changes that will take a longer period of time to effect. They might work with a coach for a year or more.
